Our drive to understand the world unites us. And now, a quarter of a century after its launch, Wikipedia continues to be the place to go on the internet where we can find answers to nearly all our questions.

Wikipedia is so much more than an online encyclopedia. It is the result of our collective curiosity and with over 65 million articles the largest knowledge repository of humankind. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers worldwide create and review content, making knowledge accessible to all of us – free of charge, anytime, anywhere.

The principle that “knowledge is human” takes on a special significance, particularly in the age of artificial intelligence. With the emergence of generative AI systems, the way we access and share knowledge has changed radically. Considering this fundamental shift, it is all the more important to protect the precious good that is human-generated knowledge.

In 2025, we championed Wikipedia and Free Knowledge in many areas, with a particular emphasis on supporting volunteer communities in Germany, expanding and maintaining the technical infrastructure of Wiki projects, and advocating for better conditions at the digital and educational policy levels.

This annual report summarizes our most important developments and achievements and highlights what we were able to accomplish in 2025 together with our volunteers, our numerous partners, and thanks to the growing support of our members and donors.

We are glad you are a part of this!

Yours,
Alice Wiegand
Chair of the Supervisory Board

Franziska Heine
Executive Director

2024 has shown more clearly than ever before how important free access to reliable and verified knowledge is.
