Project description

What problem does the project solve?

Activists, grassroot initiatives and civil society actors in the (Western) Balkans region meet up regularly in real life and want to stay in touch. Communication after these meetups is often scattered across too many different digital spaces, depending on commercial platforms. Besides these commercial platforms for communication and exchange, other solutions exist but most of them are simple info pages – “walled” in the sense that only people with previously cleared access are allowed to contribute. Besides, how can we transfer the physical individual work into digital realms, and thereby also allowing people from rural areas to participate; or to what extent can we extend our physical processes with adequate digital tools?

How does your project address the problem?

MOCI is an acronym for Mobile Open Culture and Innovation. It also means “powers” in many slavic languages. MOCI Space seeks to establish an open digital space and thereby empower local and regional activists, grassroot initiatives and civil society actors in the (Western) Balkans region through connection, co-creation and peer-to-peer learning. From the technical point of view, a decentralized, modular, and scalable approach of this free and open-source platform and making use of the Matrix protocol for federated communication should be developed and tested.
