Wikidata receives donation from Internet company Yandex

Wikimedia Deutschland is happy to announce that search engine provider Yandex will support the Wikidata project with a €150.000 donation. The amount is not bound in time or restricted to a specific goal within the Wikidata project. Instead, the financial support from the Russian-based company means additional leverage in advancing core functions of the free knowledge base as it heads into its second year of development. Wikidata is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation and has been developed and maintained by Wikimedia Deutschland since 2012. Its goal is to centralize access to and management of structured data in Wikipedia and beyond. Hardly more than a year into its existence Wikidata’s enthusiastic volunteer community has grown to more than 9.000 regular contributors and an inventory of 12 million items.

Alexander Shubin of Yandex refers to the evolution of Wikipedia in explaining the company’s support for the latest Wikimedia project: “Understanding of real world objects and interconnections between them is a very ambitious task. There are plenty of difficulties in the path of enthusiastic researchers. One of them lies in the necessity of having a rich qualitative database of such objects with their attributes and connections. This is not something that someone could do on their own. This can be done only through joint efforts of thousands of people. That's why we're happy to support Wikidata, a collaborative and open effort to create such a database. We're sure that Wikidata will become as important as Wikipedia. It will open the door to completely new products and services. This work can't be overestimated.”

By April 2013 Wikidata had become available to users in each of the more than 280 language versions of Wikipedia. Eversince, it has been possible to automatically generate inter-language links between articles in different language, to include data in infoboxes and to allow editors to create their own tools. Essentially, all Wikipedias are now in a position to collect, curate and use data together.

"Wikidata weaves a new kind of net between Wikipedias and their contributors around the world. Wikimedia projects have always been open and international, but Wikidata explores an additional level of participation. It ties the knowledge of people into an ever-growing common structure that is there for anyone to shape and expand," remarks Pavel Richter, CEO of Wikimedia Deutschland, with special regard to Wikidata's machine-readable data repository.

“We are very pleased that companies are realizing the central role that Wikidata could play in the future of the Web,” adds Denny Vrandečić, who is Wikidata’s project director at Wikimedia Deutschland. “Yandex, as a partner of the consortium, has already demonstrated an understanding of the role of structured data on the Web. This donation will allow us to continue developing new features in Wikidata, which aims to support the Wikipedias, the other Wikimedia projects, and external projects.”

With its official launch in 2012 Wikidata became the first new Wikimedia project since 2006, when Wikiversity was launched. All data is published under a free license. As of May 2013 Wikidata is the most frequently edited Wikimedia project with around 15 million contributions per month.
